Our Commitment To The "Star Trek" Vision Of The Future
Star Trek portrays the 23rd and 24th centuries as a bright and positive era for the human race and the sentient inhabitants of many distant and varied worlds. Here at the beginning of the 21st century, that future is under threat from global warming, disease, and war. Although we are just a small group of people, we believe that if everyone does what they can, we have a good chance of making our dream - Gene Roddenberry's dream - come true. This page lists some of the ways that we're working towards the Star Trek future.

DreamHost.com
Our website is hosted by California-based Dreamhost.com. When Dreamhost worked out that their company was generating as much carbon-dioxide as 545 average-sized homes, they got involved with carbon offsetting and Renewable Energy Credits, switched their servers for more energy-efficient versions, and are always on the look-out for further ways to reduce their emissions and conserve natural resources. Their drive has been so successful that they are now completely carbon neutral! The U.S.S. Pharaoh are pleased to have just renewed our hosting contract with Dreamhost, and to continue to give our business to a company which is making such an effort to go green and stay green.

Folding@Home
In addition to our main website, the U.S.S. Pharaoh maintains an e-mail and portal server for use by our members. On this server, we have installed the "Folding@Home" client. Folding@home is a distributed computing project - people from throughout the world download and run software to band together to make one of the largest supercomputers in the world. Folding@Home uses novel computational methods coupled to distributed computing, to simulate problems millions of times more challenging than previously achieved. This means that whenever our server is not using 100% of its computing power to accomplish its other tasks (which is most of the time!) it is aiding scientific research in finding cures for currently incurable illnesses.
The Folding@Home grid is currently processing research on a number of illnesses, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.
